SMS  & GKV EXCHANGE PROGRAM – 2013

A group of 20 students and two teachers of  St.Mark’s Sr.Sec.Public School, Janakpuri, New Delhi visited Gaziantep College Foundation Private Schools, Turkey as part of a student exchange and cultural program.  The students showcased the rich Indian culture by presenting the folk dances of  India as Guests of  Honour in the ‘Annual International Folk Dance Festival’  organized by the host school.  This Global Programme  from 27th May to 4th June 2013 aimed to equip the students with a global perspective, initiated by Ms. Inderpreet Kaur Ahluwalia (Education Supervisor-Primary), the programme  gave the students an opportunity to communicate and collaborate with students from different cultures, so that they learn and appreciate the culture and  traditions of other countries and share their knowledge in the field of dance, curricular and extra co-curricular activities.

The students shared the stage with other Dance groups from Cyprus, Ukraine, Romania, Georgia, Ingushetia and Cuvasistan.  The Indian dances were also performed during the Parade and at the City Square.  The  performances of the Indian Students were highly appreciated and applauded by the  esteemed guests including the City Mayor.  The rhythm of the dandhiya, the beats of the bhangra and the riot of colors of the Indian costumes left the audiences enthralled and spellbound wanting to know more about the rich Indian Culture.

The students got an opportunity to visit the Copper Smith Bazar, Medusa Glass Museum, Tuntun Hani, Turkish bath etc.  They also visited the Zeugma Mosaic Museum and the towns of  Sanli Urfa and Halfeti on the banks of River Euphrates. The students enjoyed the Turkish hospitality of the host families as well as  Turkish cuisine including the Kebabs and Baklava.  The Progrmme ended with  a City Tour of Istanbul where students got an insight into the rich history of Turkey by visiting the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, Egyptian bazaar and Topkapi Palace.  For the students of SMS the entire  experience was enriching and fulfilling for they have  made friends and memories which will last them a lifetime.
